Why we gave all 80 sponsors and vendors of our first 5K their own permanent web page instead of a logo in a footer — and how we built it to scale to 2027.

A local business sponsors a community 5K. What do they get? Usually: a logo on a banner that comes down Sunday afternoon, a mention in a post-race email, and a spot in a footer that gets redesigned out of existence within two years. That’s the entire return on a real dollar investment in a first-year event nobody had heard of yet.

We thought that trade was bad for everyone, so we didn’t build it that way. All 80 sponsors, vendors, and organizers who backed the 2026 Bronte Harbour Classic — 21 sponsors, 52 vendors, 7 organizing groups — got their own permanent page in the race archive. Not a logo. A page.

Why sponsorship exposure normally has an expiration date

Most race sponsorship deliverables are physical and temporary: a banner, a table, an announcer mention. The website version is usually a logo grid — rows of images, no story, no proof, and no reason for Google or an AI answer engine to ever surface a sponsor’s name in connection with the event again. When the site gets redesigned for next year, that grid is often the first thing to go.

I understand why. Building even a simple page per sponsor sounds like a developer task, and most race organizing committees are volunteers with zero engineering budget. That’s the actual reason sponsor pages don’t exist for most local races — not lack of interest, lack of a cheap way to produce 80 of them without writing 80 pages of custom code.

What we built instead

Every partner — sponsor, vendor, or organizer — gets a page with four things: their story in a sentence or two, their specific role in the race, real photos of them at the event (tagged automatically by the AI photo pipeline I covered last week), and a link back to their own site.

The technical trick is that none of these 80 pages is hand-built. Each partner is a single structured content file — name, category, sponsorship tier, role, website, a couple of sentences of copy — and a shared page template renders all of them consistently. Adding partner number 81 means writing one short file, not one new page. We use Astro’s content collections for this, which validates every entry against a schema before the site builds, so a missing field fails the build instead of shipping a broken page.

That’s the part that makes “give everyone a permanent page” actually affordable for two volunteers. The marginal cost of the 80th sponsor page is a few minutes of writing, not a few hours of coding.

Not every partner gets the same page, and that’s intentional

The 80 partner pages are deliberately not identical: sponsors, vendors, and organizers are distinct content types with different fields, because they earned their place in the race differently and a runner looking them up wants different information. A sponsor page carries their tier — official or partner — and the specific role that tier bought, whether that’s the bib sponsorship that put Oakvest Group’s name on every runner’s chest or the pace-car and signage partnership that let Signarama Oakville dress the lead vehicle. A festival vendor’s page is built around what they set up on race day, like Costco’s membership sign-up booth at the waterfront market. An organizer’s page tells the story of one of the seven groups — clubs, charities, apparel partners — who did the actual work of building the event.

That distinction matters because a generic “our sponsors” page flattens everyone into the same logo grid we were trying to avoid. Separating the content types meant we could give a single festival booth and a lead sponsorship different amounts of space and prominence without pretending they were the same commitment.

The honest limitation: templates don’t write the story

One thing I won’t oversell is what the automation actually writes: the system generates the page — layout, structured data, consistent formatting, image handling — automatically. It does not generate the story. Someone still has to know that Signarama Oakville is a family sign shop that’s operated since 1986, or that Oakvest Group is a Scotia Wealth Management team that put its name on every race bib. That’s relationship work, not automation, and no AI pipeline replaces the conversation where a partner tells you why they showed up.

What automation buys you is the ability to spend that relationship time on the story instead of on HTML. We still write every sentence of every partner’s page by hand. We just don’t hand-code the page around it.

Why this matters more than a banner ever did

A banner is gone the moment the tent comes down. A permanent page keeps doing work in three ways.

It’s evidence, not a promise. When we talk to a business about sponsoring 2027, we don’t describe a hypothetical banner position. We send a link to a live 2026 partner page — their logo, their story, and real photos our AI tagged them in from race day. A prospect can see exactly what they’re buying before they commit anything.

It compounds in search. A static page with real content about a real local business, linked from a race site that keeps existing, accumulates search visibility the way a one-off social post never does. Google’s own guidance on structured local business data is explicit that consistent, persistent listings outperform one-time mentions — and the same logic increasingly applies to how AI answer engines decide which businesses to cite. Each partner page carries Organization schema markup for exactly that reason.

It survives the redesign. Because every partner page is a content file, not a hand-built HTML page, a future site redesign can change every visual element without touching a single sponsor’s content or breaking a single link. The page is decoupled from the theme. That’s the same durability principle I wrote about in Part 1 of this series — permanence has to be architected in, not promised.

What’s already happening for 2027

We didn’t wait for the 2027 race to be fully planned before opening the door. A handful of 2027 partner pages are already live at bronteharbourclassic.com/2027/ — returning sponsors who committed early, showing up the same way their 2026 pages did. That’s a small thing, but it means the second year of this race starts from a partner directory that’s already partly built, not from zero.

How to build this for your own event

You don’t need a development team to do this — I’m a mechanical engineer who directs AI to build the implementation, not a career programmer. If you organize any recurring event with sponsors or vendors, here’s the sequence.

1. Define one schema for every partner type. Sponsor, vendor, volunteer group — whatever your categories are, decide the handful of fields every page needs (name, role, story, website, image) before you write a single page.

2. Store partners as structured content, not custom pages. A content collection, a spreadsheet feeding a template, a headless CMS — anything that separates “the data about this partner” from “the code that renders a page” turns 80 pages into one template plus 80 short files.

3. Write the story yourself. Don’t try to automate the sentence that makes a partner’s page worth reading. A generic AI-written blurb reads like one; a specific detail — what they actually did on race day — doesn’t.

4. Tie in whatever proof you already have. If you’re tagging photos by sponsor or vendor the way we tag them by bib number, pull those photos onto the partner’s page automatically. Proof beats description.

5. Publish before you ask for renewal. A live 2027 directory, even mostly empty, gives early partners a reason to commit first and a page to point new prospects at while you’re still filling it in.

Do this once and adding your 100th partner costs the same five minutes as your first.
